The Rice Military District of Houston is located near Memorial park and Downtown. With its beautiful scenery, and prime location, it is a perfect place to make a new home. The development of the Rice Military area began a long time ago, along with the development of the rest of the "Old West End". In 1902 Huston's Drug Store on Washington Avenue was the last pharmacy on the way out of town (Houston, that is)! Glenwood Cemetery was at the edge of the then city limits. As Houston experienced economic growth and expansion, Washington and Houston Avenues became thriving commercial corridors linking a bustling downtown to the shiny new suburbs. The first families of Houston made their homes in the neighborhoods of the First and Sixth Wards, and later Camp Logan, Cottage Grove, Crestwood/Glencove, Magnolia Grove, Rice Military, and Woodcrest. This is the area we now call the Old West End.
